Sentencing & Corrections Terminology Glossary (A–Z) | Spanish-English

A Professional Gift to the Interpreting Community from Samuel Arcelay

Sentencing, Punishment & Corrections

Once the verdict is read, the legal narrative shifts dramatically. The courtroom transforms from a venue of fact-finding to one of consequence. For the legal interpreter, this phase is often the most emotionally charged and technically complex stage of the judicial process.

"The vocabulary moves away from 'objections' and 'evidence' toward equity, mitigation, and rehabilitation. The interpreter must convey the precise difference between a concurrent sentence and a consecutive sentence—a distinction that translates to years or decades of a human life."

Modern sentencing is a calculated process governed by statutes and guidelines. Beyond incarceration, the court imposes fines, restitution to victims, and special assessments. Mastery of these terms defines the boundaries of liberty.
