The Professional Introduction | The interpreter and the consumer
A Professional Gift to the Interpreting Community from Samuel Arcelay
Establishing Authority and Protocol in Every Encounter
The introduction is the most important part of the assignment. It sets the "Ground Rules" for both the professional and the client. Use this standardized script to ensure a smooth, accurate flow.
1. English Introduction (To the Professional)
"Hello, my name is [Your Name] and I will be your Spanish Interpreter. I will interpret everything you say exactly as you say it. Please speak directly to the client, use short sentences, and pause frequently to allow for accurate interpretation. Everything discussed here remains confidential."2.
01.
First Person: Always interpret in the first person ("I have a pain" instead of "He says he has a pain").
02.
Accuracy: Remind them that you will not add, omit, or change any information.
03.
Transparency: If you must interrupt for clarification, state: "The Interpreter needs a clarification."
04.
Neutrality: Avoid side-conversations with the client. Everything said must be interpreted.
